Domed Basilica

Domed Basilica
   A church of basilican (q.v.) plan with a dome (q.v.) over the central part of the nave (q.v.). The first domed basilica was the church at Meriamlik on the south coast of Asia Minor (q.v.), dating to 471-494. One of the most famous is St. Irene in Constantinople, built by Justinian I (q.v.).
